Tyre Up-sizing

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

If you are the one out of few who want to remain attraction center of the gatherings or who are fond of driving customized cars, most probably you would have thought of upsizing your car tyres. Tyre upsizing brings massive appealing change in the appearance of your car. I had become fad up with my existing car look but had no means to replace it. A Ceat tyre adviser, who is my close friend, advised me to upsize my car tyres for fresh look. The following tips, which he shared, will help you too in upsizing your car tyres with more confidence.

Till some years back, cars used to have 15 or 16 inches wheels. But, now the options of having 16, 17 18 or even 20 inches tyres are also available. Choosing the size for tyres upsizing is not just the matter of personal choice you need to consider the configuration of car also. The rolling diameter i.e. overall height is the most important aspect to be considered. Upsizing your car tyres may need the modification of suspension. Big wheels having large rim space but the same rolling diameter may solve this problem.

Anti-lock brake, speedometer and odometer are calibrated for the recommended rolling diameter. Ideally, the variation in rolling diameter shouldn’t exceed 3% from factory recommendations, otherwise space adjusters will have to be used. With the increase in size of wheel, sidewall gets shorter; it means that tyres will hold less air. The solution to this problem is the wide tyres with more air pressure.

I am lucky that I have a tyre specialist friend, you too, before going for upsizing of tyres, consult with the customer advisers of reputed tyre brand outlets in your city. After all, it is not only about the aesthetic look of your car, your safety is the primary concern.

How To Judge The Tyre Quality?

Monday, January 4th, 2010

The heat of recent recession period is still being felt by many like me and you. The advice of the car mechanic to change the tyres comes as a blow for many of us despite of knowing the importance of having good tyres in the car. Sometimes these opinions are found biased because of many reasons. Here are some tips to judge the quality of the tyres from Technical Adviser (CEAT Tyres).

Every tyre bears four wear markers around the circumference. When you notice flush wear marker, it means that your tyre has 1.6mm or less of tread left. This is the time you must change the tyre. Tyres can wear unevenly so check the tyre thoroughly to ensure left out tread depth. Tyres having tread depth around 2mm should be changed. Tread depth meters are made available at branded tyres outlet. Motor safety organizations recommend that tyres having tread depth of 3mm should be replaced because the current legal limit of 1.6 mm isn’t sufficient to protect drivers during adverse driving conditions. Penny test is another popular method to judge the tire quality.

Every tyre contains certain amount of moisture and oil, with the passage of time both of these get evaporated making the tyre too hard. Normally, tyres are designed for four to five years, so the use of tyre is not only the criteria to change the tyres.Physical cuts, bulge, deep marks on the sidewall and deformation are also the strong indications for the change of tyres.

If you are not confident about the condition of your tyres, you may visit CEAT like branded tyres outlets to get free quality check and unbiased opinion of experts.

Choose the right tyre for your vehicle

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Choosing the right tyre for your vehicle is not an easy task. You should consider various key factors like price brand, comfort, performance, appearance and safety. Being the only part of the vehicle that is in contact with the road surface, tyre acts as the most important component of a vehicle. It is a general rule that you should always go for the tyre size that is recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. An ideal fitment for optimum performance is always to have identical tyres. This rule becomes even more important at higher speed.

A set of right tyre for your vehicle is required because of its age, deterioration or you want to improve the vehicle’s performance. Tyres are the vital part of a vehicle, yet many of us take them for granted that we can move from one place to another place safely. Tyres are the only contact between your car and the road. Thus, like your vehicle, they too require your attention and regular maintenance.

You should know what type of tires is the best for your car when it comes to replacement time. Before selecting the tyre, you actually need to research first that the new tyre is suitable for the vehicle you wish to fit them to. Weather, such as frequent rain, heavy winter, snow, extreme heat, etc. can affect the type of tyre that you need to use.

Selecting a right tyre is based upon various key factors. Some of them are given below -

  • Car Tyre Size:- You should always choose the same size tyre as the ones that the vehicle was manufactured with. Changing car tyre size can improve a vehicle’s handling and performance but consult a car tyre specialist before doing this.
  • Driving Habits:- Driving style is another key factor that affects your decision of selecting tyres.  Driving on lanes where the road is muddy or slippery or if you constantly have to brake and accelerate, then your car will require tyres that can provide extra grip.
  • Price:- It is true that “you get what you pay for”, even in this case. But if you don’t use your car frequently, don’t buy the expensive tyres as economy tires will be more than suitable.
  • Car Tyre Type :- Wide variety of car tires are there in the market to serve different purposes. The most popular types of car tyres are standard/all season tires, performance tires, winter tires, all terrain tires, run flat tires, etc.

Tyre Pressure Check- Basic of fuel efficient driving

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Maintaining a right tire pressure is as important as having water and oil in your car. A simple, quick check of your tire pressure could help to save you money on fuel, or avoid the risk of a serious accident. You should check your car tire for wear, cracking, bulging, pressure or objects caught in the tread at least once a week. Correct tire pressure is also considered as the basic of fuel efficient driving.

If you tire pressure is incorrect, you will find that you use more fuel than necessary, your braking can be ineffective and your grip to the road could be seriously affected as well. Hence, correct tire pressure is crucial to driving performance. There are no flashing lights to let you know when your tire pressure is too low or too high, so it is up to you to stay on top of it.

Under pressure tires can cause resistance on the road which implies that the car has to work harder while driving. In this case, the car will consume more fuels.

Steps to Maintain Correct Tire Pressure

The tire pressure on your car is very important and you need to keep it at the right level. Following are few steps that will help you to maintain correct tire pressure.

Get a tire pressure gauge. Tire pressure gauges are very cheap and can be found in almost every gas station, department store, and definitely at any auto parts store. Some even have digital readings.

Check your tires. Connect the gauge by unscrewing the cap on the valve that’s coming out of your tire rim. Tire pressure is measured in PSI (Pounds per Square Inch). The standard tire pressure is 32 PSI for all cars and light trucks.

Adjust the PSI. If the pressure in your car tires is at 28 PSI, then you need to add 4 pounds to reach 32. Rule of thumb is that if you’re using an electric air pump at the gas station, they pump about 1 pound per second. If your car is at 28 PSI, then pumping air in the tire for about 4 seconds should put your tire to 32 PSI.

One can also invest in tire pressure monitor or other devices to keep the car tire in proper condition. These tire pressure devices can save you a fortune and maybe even help save lives!
